The Bell Below

Being unheard does not mean nothing was said.

Chapter IV — The Bell Below

The Meaning

Truth does not become unreal because it was ignored, misunderstood, or spoken where others refused to listen.

The Story

Every morning, Neris rowed beyond the harbor wall and lowered a brass cup into the sea. The fishermen said she was measuring salt. The council said she was collecting evidence of nothing. Children said her brother lived below and knocked on the ocean floor when he wanted breakfast. Neris let them speak. At twenty fathoms, the line began to tremble. Not with current. Not with fish. Three slow pulses traveled through the cord and entered the bones of her hand. The bell beneath the drowned tower was ringing again. Above it, the sea remained flat enough to reflect every cloud without breaking one.
