The Inner Lantern

Some light is meant to reveal the self rather than guide everyone else.

Chapter VII — The Inner Lantern

The Meaning

Usefulness to others is not the same as self-knowledge. Some light exists to make a person visible to themselves.

The Story

For twenty years, Elian lit every lamp in the city except the one inside his chest. He knew it was there because its iron handle pressed against his ribs when he bent. Physicians called it an old injury. Priests called it a gift. Elian called it nothing. Each evening he carried flame along the river streets until strangers could find their doors. He lit the baker’s corner first, the hospital gate second, and the narrow stair where children waited for parents returning from mills. People trusted his route more than the clock. They trusted Elian with things that had nothing to do with lamps. He remembered whose husband drank, which apprentice slept in the workshop, and which widow left her curtains open because darkness made the rooms feel occupied. He delivered messages without admitting he carried them and repaired shutters when people asked only for light.
