The Unfinished Bridge

The Meaning
Certainty often follows movement rather than preceding it. Some structures can only carry the person willing to place weight where proof has not yet appeared.
The Story
The bridge ended seventeen steps beyond the cliff. Its first stones were older than the city. Its final stones were pale, sharp-edged, and unworn. Beyond them, chalk lines continued through empty air toward no visible shore. Iven had spent twelve years drawing the missing span. Every plan failed the same inspection. “Where does it land?” the council asked. “I don’t know.” “Then it is not a bridge.” On the morning they ordered it dismantled, Iven walked to the last completed stone and placed one foot beyond it. Something solid met his weight. Only after he stepped did the stone appear.
