The Choir of Empty Chairs

What is gone may still shape the rhythm of what continues. Absence changes participation without making it meaningless.

Conductor Mae prepared the final concert for an empty hall. Thirty-two chairs faced the stage. Every singer who had once occupied them was gone—some to age, some to war, some merely to lives elsewhere. Yet when afternoon light entered, each chair cast the shadow of a person leaning toward the next. Mae raised her hands. The shadows inhaled. On the music stand lay a blank page bearing the pressure marks of an erased song. The city had ordered the choir dissolved. Too few members remained, and audiences preferred new music unburdened by memorial. Mae agreed publicly. Privately, she scheduled one final rehearsal.
