The Garden Behind the Wall

The Story
Tera built the wall after the third harvest was taken before ripening. She used stone, not thorns. She left a water channel beneath it and harmed no root that could be moved. Still, the village called the garden dead as soon as they could no longer enter it. Behind the wall, apricots colored in peace. The garden had belonged to Tera’s family, but for years its gate remained open. Neighbors crossed for herbs. Children climbed trees. During famine, Tera gave everything and replanted. Her mother had believed soil became healthier under many hands. She taught Tera which plants tolerated feet and which needed quiet roots. Access was never truly without rules; the rules had once been carried by relationship instead of stone.
